Say hello to one of our producers, Rick Tukendorf. Rick is a conventional farmer in Newtonville Ontario and has been farming since age 6! White beans are his favourite crop to grow because he enjoys the challenge they offer. Rick was actually one of the first to grow white beans in the area – a feat he should be proud of! Rick decided to try growing quinoa this year to challenge himself with a new crop.
When asked about the challenges he sees in the agriculture industry, Rick said one of the largest challenges is that other countries are developing agriculture bases and flooding the market. He wonders how well Canada can compete. Weather, he says, is another challenge we are always facing here in Canada as there is no ‘norm’ anymore in terms of temperature, precipitation etc. This year has been a perfect example of that – with so little precipitation, its been tough keeping the crops watered!
Rick’s words to live by? “Only grow what you can afford to lose”. Thanks for taking the time to chat Rick!
