Since first appearing on CBC’s Dragons’ Den with his Ontario Quinta Quinoa venture in early 2015, Georgetown resident, entrepreneur and founder of Katan Kitchens, Jamie Draves, has been working hard to bring his high quality quinoa to the market.
Draves’s journey to commercialize high-quality, locally-grown quinoa began in 2007 when he experienced a major health crisis. Diagnosed with idiopathic pancreatitis, Draves was written off by traditional medicine and quinoa became a staple food on his pathway back to good health.
“That sparked the idea for the development of a high-quality quinoa in Ontario,” said Draves.
“Our focus since then has been a local quinoa that was superior in nutritional value to what is currently on the market. We have been testing our process for improvements and efficiencies and were able to get approval on six nutritional claims, which is significant in that no other quinoa even has one claim.”
These claims include high in protein and fibre as well as being an excellent source of magnesium and iron, which is the highest claim that can be made for these nutrients.
Katan Kitchens has since reappeared on a Dragons’ Den update segment in early 2016, has further refined their processing line, launched online sales of Quinta and is planning to expand quinoa acreage this year five-fold with additional trials extending into Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. This expansion couldn’t come at a better time, as Quinta Quinoa has hit shelves in some northern Ontario locations and demand has been high.
Quinta is available for purchase online at www.quinta.ca. Katan Kitchens will be exhibiting at the Halton Health, Home and Happiness show this weekend at the Mold-Masters SportsPlex on Friday, April 15, 1-8 p.m. and Saturday, April 16, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
